There are two visa categories for students wishing to study in the United States. The "F" visa is for non-immigrants who want to pursue academic studies and/or language training programs, and the "M" visa is for non-immigrants who want to pursue nonacademic or vocational studies. Students are encouraged to apply for their visa early to provide ample time for visa processing. The applicants have to fulfill certain preconditions to apply for above mentioned study visa categories.

The student must:

be enrolled as a full-time student in an "academic" educational program, a language-training program, or a vocational program in an approved institution; be proficient in English or be enrolled in courses leading to English proficiency; have sufficient funds available for self-support during the entire proposed course of study; maintain a residence abroad which he/she has no intention of giving up.
